People who have different views of Christianity were massacred through the instigation of Roman Catholic Church, thousands of people died during the inquisition and with the advent of Islam; the Christians launched the crusade which saw the slaughter of many Muslims and Jews. After the death of Prophet Muhammad, there were disagreements on who should succeed him as the leader. The conflict led to the division of Muslims into two camps- the Sunnis and the party of Ali also known as the Shiites
This conflict led to the slaughter of thousands of Muslims then. Today the conflict is still continuing in different corners of the world. In Iraq, the Sunnis are attacking the Shiites who’s some Sunnis regarded as infidels or non believers. Sunnis are also attacked by the Shiites.
The conflict of 1400 years ago is still boiling today. The emergence of Islamic state made the matter worse. In an attempt to establish an Islamic caliphate by some Sunnis, they took up arms and thousands of people were killed, there are many beheadings.
The Islamic states militants are killing Sunnis and Shiites as well as Christians and other minorities. The militants are killing Sunnis and Shiites as well as Christians and other minorities. The Yasidis who are minorities who are also living in Iraq were targeted with their women sold among the militants. The Islamic Arab countries as well as some Islamic countries have formed coalition against the Islamic states fighters with the air support from the United States as well as some European countries. One will begin to wonder what religion has turn to.
Perhaps some might believe that Islam is a violent religion but even the past have shown that Christianity also had its own share of violence in the past. The story of King Henry VIII of England is also an example with the events then one can only wonder how religion can be manipulated by individuals. King Henry who was a catholic decided to modify the church after the Pope refused to grant him a divorce from Katherine of Aragon after she failed to produce a male heir to the king.
In the ensuing disagreement that followed and the attempt to bring all churches in England under his control, hundreds of English were killed. When Queen Mary the daughter of Henry succeeded King Edward as the Queen of England, she decided to convert back the people of England back to Catholicism, hundreds were killed, and some were burnt alive although everything stabilized with the succession of Queen Elizabeth 1 the second daughter of King Henry VIII.
One cannot but wonder that the disagreement of King Henry VIII then led to the formation of Church of England popularly known today as Anglican Church which the monarch of England remain the head till today. One of the darkest moment of human history occurred before and during the Second World War (1939-1945).
The Jews were particularly targeted by the Nazi régime in Germany. The Jews were sent to concentration camps in Germany and in different part of Europe where over 6 million of them were exterminated. The executions of the Jews were also reported in the Soviet Union.
In Nigeria, a Muslim sect known as Boko Haram began a campaign against the government of Nigeria with the intention of establishing a caliphate. As the Nigerian military struggle to contain them, thousands of civilians were killed. Churches and mosques were burnt and some people were beheaded.
In Pakistan, thousands of people have been killed as a result of bombing campaign by the Taliban Islamic militant organization. The Taliban want the introduction of strict Sharia law in Pakistan and therefore decided to launch a holy war. The activities of the Taliban in Afghanistan are not different from that of Pakistan.
Somalia has also being captive to an Islamic militant organization called Al Shaba which has been fighting the government of Somalia of which many atrocities have been committed.
The question is, ‘why can’t God intervene when people are fighting in order to justify himself? Why can’t God show his face and make declaration or are we just being pursing illusion and mere imagination?
There are some scholars and inventors who believe that human love to pursue illusion and mere imagination instead of focusing on reality. Paul Henro Thiry Barond’Holbach in his book ’the system of nature’ (18 century) said, ‘the source of man’s unhappiness is his ignorance of nature, the pertinacity with which he cling to blind opinions imbibed in his infancy, which interweave themselves with his existence, the consequent prejudice that wraps his mind, that prevent his expansion that renders him the slave of fiction appears to doom him to continual error.
This man believed that we are slaves to what we have been fed with information during our infancy and therefore we are doomed by making continual error in our lives. We have been unable to understand our environment and to understand natures as well.
Thomas Edison in an interview he made with the New York Times magazine stated: “nature is what we know; we do not know the gods of religions. And nature is not kind or merciful or loving. If God made me – the fabled god of the three qualities of which I spoke: mercy, kindness, love – he also made fish I catch and eat. And where does his mercy, kindness and love for that fish come in? No. nature made us – nature did it all, not the gods of religion.”
We must recall that Thomas Edison is one of greatest inventor in history; he gave us the commercially electric light bulb and others.
Stephen Hawkins a physicist of great renown stated: “judging all these can we then conclude that what these scholars and scientist are said to be true? Well it will be necessary to see whether what has been written in these holy books is verified to be true.
The Bible and the Koran will be selected in this analysis. Concentration will be on the Bible since it came before the Koran and that the Koran also agrees with the narratives of the Bible especially the creation theory, the first man and woman, Adam and Eve, the personality Abraham even to Jesus.
There are problems in knowing whether the narratives in the bible and Koran are true. This is because there are opposition from some religious quarters not to allow inquest into the originality of their books and believing that the events in the Bible and the Koran shall not be questioned.
The advocates of the bible in their bid to validate the events of bible sanctioned the archeological research into the events described and defined in the bible.
Various excavations were carried out in the areas where the bible narratives are believed to have to have happened. The intention is to find proof that the bible is factual and its narratives should be understood as historical events.
Pope Pius XII in 1943 recommended that the archeological findings must be taken into account in interpreting the narratives of the bible. William Dever one of the world’s leading biblical archeologist wrote and said, archeology certainly doesn’t prove literal readings of the bible it calls them into question and that is what bothers some people most people really think that archeology is out there to prove the bible from the beginnings of what we call biblical archeology is out there to prove the bible. Perhaps 150 years ago, scholars mostly western scholars, have attempted to use archeological data to prove the bible. And for a long time it was thought to work. William Albright, the great father of our discipline often spoke of the “archeological revolution” well the revolution has come but not in the way Albright thought. The truth of the matter today is that archeology raise more question about the historicity of the Hebrew bible and even the New Testament than it provide answers and that’s very disturbing to some people.
After various excavations of the land of Israel, Sinai and various other biblical areas, William Dever also wrote
Archeology as it is practiced today must be able to challenge, as well as confirm the bible stories. Some things described there really did happen but others did not. The biblical narratives about Abraham, Moses, Joshua and Solomon probably reflect some historical memories of people and by places but the larger than life portraits of the bible are unrealistic and contradicted by the archeological evidence.
The archaeologist Ze’ev Herzog of Tel Aviv University also writes in Haaretz newspaper:
This is what archeologists have learned from their excavations in the land of Israel: the Israelites were never in Egypt, did not wander in the desert, did not conquer the land in military campaigns and did not pass it on to the 12 tribes of Israel, perhaps even harder to swallow is that the united monarchy of David and Solomon which is described as the regional power was at most a small tribal kingdom.
And it will come at an unpleasant shock to many that the god of Israel YHWH had a female consort and that the early Israelite religion adopted monotheism only in the warning period of the monarchy and not at mount Sinai Professor Finkelstein who is believed to be the father of biblical archaeology confirmed this.
Professor Finkelstein who is believed to be the father of biblical archaeology confirmed to the Jerusalem post that Jewish archeologists do not found any archeological or historical evidence to back the narratives of biblical exodus, the Israelites wandering in the wilderness and Joshua’s conquest of the land of Canaan. He also said that there is no archaeological evidence to back the existence of the temple of Solomon.
Professor Yoni Mizrahi who worked with the International Atomic Energy Agency also agreed with Professor Finkelstein’s findings. An Egyptian archeologist Zali Hawass said regarding the exodus of Israelites from Egypt.
“Really it is a myth, this is my carrier as an archaeologist. I should tell them the truth. If the people are upset, that is not my problem”
Well for those who believe everything in the bible well it is necessary to conduct more research but the truth is that while some events are true, many are not true, the same also apply to the Koran because Koran ratified almost all the events in the bible and that actually make it vulnerable. It is very important to say that some of the narratives found in the bible were written during the time of David or even toward the end of monarchy in Israel.
The personality of Moses, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob may not exist at all. The narratives of Adam and Eve did not take place. Adherents to Christianity are warned not to take all the events in the bible literarily for some of them might be spiritual in nature for they did not actually happen. The person of Abraham who the Jews, Christians and Muslim respect may not exist at all. The reason why people of different faiths kill themselves may not exist at all. So human beings die in vain for no reason at all and consider the nature of man they are difficult to convince.
The psychoanalyst Sigmund Feud and philosopher Ludwighad long argued that god and other religious beliefs are human invention created to satisfy psychological and emotional need.
Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels also argued that the belief in god and religion are used by those in power to oppress the working class. Mikhail Bakunin stated that “the idea of god implies the abdication of human reason and justice; it is the most decisive negation of human liberty and necessarily ends in the enslavement of mankind in theory and practice”. He also said further that if god did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him.
